D. Palmer writes: This is an interesting picture, the root cellar is behind the sawhorses, it's about 10' deep and 9' x 9' square. The stump is one I dug up with the backhoe, and the septic tank is about to go into it's hole. I'm setting a line and used the boom to lift the septic tank into place. I used the thumb on the stump, it's there on the rocks (circled in white). The entire building site was benched into the hillside using the little backhoe. 8hp honda engine and hydraulics....pretty cool!

The machine can dig a pretty deep hole, big enough for a septic tank installation. I also dug a root cellar for the cabin, had to make a road down into the hole, then pull the dirt ramp out as I backed out. innovative backhoe work, but for a small remote site, this little guy has been a real worker. I added some more plate to beef up the braces you sent me cause I noticed they started to bend a bit, (Note: These parts were beefed up in the plans a several years ago.) probably from the beating I've given it when chipping at rocks and stumps. I tore off one of the outrigger sockets, not just the weld, but the steel tore next to the weld, so I rewelded it and added some material around it. My neighbors have a Kubota tractor and backhoe and mine out reaches theirs and I think the bucket is bigger and the thumb makes it more useful....plus I can go places nothing with wheels can go. Not great for long distances, but for my small area, I can go up hills and hang in places no wheeled machine would want to be.
